Providencia is a small volcanic island, 7 km long and 4 km wide, located 72 km north of San Andres. It has beautiful beaches, turquoise water and a rugged peak, El Pico or The Peak, at an altitude of 360 meters. The land is rich, with all kinds of fruits, cereals, vegetables and flowers. A nirvana for nature lovers. But during the night of November 14 to 15, 2020, a hurricane called Iota decided to put the 6,000 inhabitants of the island to the test. With winds of up to 275 km per hour and raging seas, it destroyed 98% of the island's infrastructure and left the landscape disfigured. It was the first time that Providencia suffered such a cataclysm, which will "only" kill 4 people. The government promised a reconstruction plan in 100 days. But in 2022, the island is still immersed in its work. The lanchas that once brought divers to the great barrier reef that surrounds the island are used to transport construction materials, and the hotels that are still standing have reopened their cabañas only to offer shelter to the inhabitants who were left homeless.
