Santa Marta is the oldest city on the continent, it was founded by Rodrigo de Bastidas on July 29, 1525, on the territory of the Tayronas Indians who took refuge in the surrounding high mountains, today known as Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

Today, Santa Marta (460,000 inhabitants) is the capital of the department of Magdalena. Its port, once a springboard for privateers, has become a gigantic cargo terminal. The Rodadero is Colombia's favourite seaside resort, 10 minutes from the centre. For the foreign tourist, the city is mainly a base for exploring the surrounding area, the Sierra Nevada and Tayrona National Park. The mild climate (27°C on average) and the beauty of the surrounding countryside explain why so many visitors decide to settle here permanently.
