" Del Caribe aflora, Bella y encantadora, Con mar y rio, Una gran sociedad ". If you listen to the lyrics of the Colombian salsa legend Joe Arroyo, with his hit En Barranquilla me quedo, the tone is immediately set: the pride of Barranquilla is its Carnival, the sense of festivity and the generosity of its inhabitants. The Barranquillais are naturally joyful, open and warm. In the squares and public parks, vendors selling flavored ice cream(raspaos), fruit, and fish, hustle and bustle. Dockworkers, slender women, delivery boys, wander the streets. Some of them are accosting each other from one sidewalk to the other, others are joking with each other in their dialect Spanish, difficult to understand for a foreigner. The cuisine reflects this reign of festive spirit: coconut rice, delicious seafood soups, wheat cakes, many Middle Eastern influences as well. With the sun, the dances go on all day long, even if you don't forget to work. The Barranquilleros are also known for this, La Arenosa (the sandy city) as it is called, is in full development and its port is the most important of the Atlantic coast. It is the capital of the Atlántico department and the main urban center of the Caribbean region. Its 1.2 million inhabitants (2.1 million for the metropolitan area) make it the4th largest city in the country. With an average temperature of 27°C throughout the year, Barranquilla could only be a caliente city, Colombian sanctuary of classical salsa and cumbia. For fans of the beautiful Shakira, the Novia de Barranquilla also has its monument next to the Metropolitan Stadium.
