Utsjoki, one of the last stops in north-east Lapland on the Norwegian border, is bordered by silky blue lakes. It's an enigmatic landscape, indicative of a world at the very edge of Finland. Here, the kaamos (polar night) stretches from late November to mid-January. The midnight sun takes its revenge from late May to late July. Here, 1,450 inhabitants and 20,000 reindeer make their home on the banks of the Tenojoki River, which on the Norwegian side flows into the icy Arctic Ocean. A festival is held here every July. Access is by bus or cab (www.ivalontaksit.com) from Ivalo, Inari or Rovaniemi.
