Built just a few kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland and, incidentally, the home of the world-famous Finn, Santa Claus! With 60,000 inhabitants, Rovaniemi has established itself as the economic center of the region. Completely destroyed in 1944 by the German army, Rovaniemi was rebuilt according to Alvar Aalto's plans in the shape of reindeer antlers. Stop off to explore the region and visit the Arktikum, an outstanding museum dedicated to the environment, history and people of the Arctic. There are also companies offering tours throughout Finland.
