To the north-west, on the Swedish border, you can stop off in this pleasant little town of 22,000 inhabitants, gateway to Lapland and situated at the mouth of the Tornionjoki River, which marks the Finnish-Swedish border. Although the border exists on maps, in reality Tornio and Haparanda - the Swedish town on the other bank - are twin towns operating along the same lines. There's plenty to do here, from going out to shopping and strolling along the coast. The Naturkompaniet outlet in Haparanda is a great place to shop before heading north. When visiting Sweden, beware of the time difference!
