The port town of Kemi is famous not only for its ice castle, but also for its ice-breaking ships, which keep the Gulf of Bothnia accessible by cutting through the thick layer of ice to create the channels essential for navigation and ferry safety. In fact, the Gulf of Bothnia, which overlooks the town, freezes over for much of the winter. Visitors drop in to book an activity in the surrounding area, and the port remains a pleasant place, with its promenade and cafés open in summer. For the rest, the town is a bit drab and won't last long. It's best to continue north towards Rovaniemi.
