Founded in 1606, Vaasa boasts an exceptional UNESCO-listed environment. The town was rebuilt in stone after a fire, and the new municipality is built on the seafront, in the shelter of a beautiful archipelago. Today, with the exception of Falander's big house and Korsholm church, almost nothing remains of the former Vaasa, which the phenomenon of isostasy (uplift of the earth in relation to the oceans) has gradually moved away from the Gulf of Bothnia. This phenomenon has given rise to a myriad of islets and curious moraines. Vaasa, now home to over 60,000 inhabitants, is surrounded by lakes, bays and peninsulas.
