It was here that the first traces of habitation on the islands were discovered, traces of the Stone Age dating back over 6,000 years. Remains of 11th-century Viking dwellings have also been found here, and the central village of Kvarnbo is believed to have been their archipelago capital. A popular Viking market is held here every year. Don't miss St. Mary's Church. Before the archipelago was Christianized, a pagan sacrificial site and the remains of Viking houses stood in its place. You can admire the 13th-century baptismal font and a crucifix from the same period.
