SAINT-GEORGES CATHEDRAL (СОБОР СВЯТОГО ЮРА)

Built between 1744 and 1761 in the rococo style, on a small wall behind the park Ivan Franko, this cathedral is the centre of Ukrainian uniates. In the th century it was an important spiritual and political center in Ukrainian life. However, after the annexation of Western Ukraine to the USSR and the murder of Father A. Sheptitsky, the cathedral was closed and it could resume its activity only in 1989. The icons of the Saint George were blessed by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Lviv in 2001.
