Founded in the century, this is the oldest Orthodox church open to worship in Albania. frescoes.
Dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, this precious Orthodox church (Kisha e Fjetjes së Virgjëreshës) is the oldest open to worship in Albania. It was founded in the 6th century by Justinian (527-565), at the same time as the reconstruction of Hadrianopolis. Surrounded by an enclosure giving it a monastic appearance, the church took on its present form in the 10th and 11th centuries. Despite several thefts of icons (notably by Enver Hoxha's daughter) and recent damage by tourists, it has preserved some 13th-century frescoes.

Difficile à trouver en voiture : il ne faut pas monter jusqu'à Libohova mais tourner à gauche à une intersection (voir photo ci-dessous) puis rouler 3km sur une piste de pierres blanches (à éviter s'il pleut) puis 4km sur une route flambant neuve, réalisée par la municipalité de Labovë y Kryqit où se trouve l'église. Le lieu est formidable : un village de maisons de pierre perdu au fond d'une vallée dominée par des montagnes (qui m'ont rappelé le Caucase en Géorgie). L'église, bâtie par Justinien à l'époque de Sainte-Sophie de Constantinople est fascinante pour son âge (15 siècles), ses fresques et ses icônes. Son architecture est splendide mais branlante et des travaux tentes actuellement de la redresser.Grâce aux travaux, on peut pénétrer facilement dans l'enclos mais pour l'intérieur, il faut appeler la gardienne au numéro affiché sur le panneau des travaux et payer 200 leks le billet d'entrée.
