Himara/Himarë has a population of around 2,800. It is the capital of the municipality of Himara (8,000 inhabitants), which belongs to the district of Vlora. The village is also called Χιμάρα/Himara in Greek. It lies 10 km southeast of Vuno and 53 km northwest of Saranda. Minibus connections to Vlora, Saranda and the "Albanian Riviera", bus to Athens.Blue and white flags, graffiti celebrating Athenian soccer clubs, "GR" license plates... Himara is almost a Greek enclave in Albanian territory. In any case, this large village with its banal architecture is one of the few villages on the southern coast to be located by the sea. Famous for its tavernas, its kastro and its beautiful sandy bay, Himara is best known for its strong men. From the Epirote tribe of Chaonians, who founded the town under the name of Chimera in the 8th century BC, to the resistance fighters of the Second World War, to the Himariot warriors who joined Napoleon's "Albanian Regiment", this small Greek town has always known how to fight. In fact, it was the only town in Albania to remain autonomous during the Ottoman period. The latest in this line of strongmen is three-time Olympic weightlifter Pyrrhos Dimas. Born here in 1971, the "Lion of Himara" took Greek nationality in 1991, just before his first gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics. The local boy regularly returns to the village to see his family.
