Ballsh/Ballshi has a population of around 9,000. It is the capital of the Mallakastra district (population 55,000). The town lies 26 km southeast of Fier (minibus connections). Tucked away in a valley 231 m above sea level, this small industrial town is surrounded by oil wells and dominated by the dilapidated facilities of a huge refinery. What's more, it's difficult to get to: in Fier, minibuses wait a long time before having enough passengers to leave, and the road is potholed with tanker trucks. Ballsh's only interest lies in its proximity to the Byllis archaeological site.
