Pojan/Pojani (pronounced "poïane"/"poïani") has around 200 inhabitants and belongs to the municipality of Fier. The village lies 10 km southeast of Fier (minibus connections). Lost in the alluvial plain at the foot of the Apollonian hills of Illyria, this little village may not look like much. But it's home to some of Europe's finest "excavators". Since the discovery of the remains of the ancient city in 1916, several generations of Pojan residents have assisted the archaeologists in their research. During the chaos of 1997, Pojan families defended "their" site from gangs of looters.
