Petrela/Petrelë has a population of around 1,500 and is part of the municipality of Tirana. The village lies 14 km south-east of Tirana (accessible by minibus). Nestling beneath the small Mount Petrela (565 m above sea level), on the edge of the Elbasan freeway, this village is home to the beautiful Petrela Castle. Of Byzantine origin, its name is formed from the Greek words petra and Latin alba, which first gave Petralba, the "white stone". The site is superb, with views over the Erzen valley and olive groves. You can also enjoy the scenery while suspended in mid-air on a zip-line.
