33,645 inhabitants, 40 km from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, on the southernmost tip of the island, of which it is the second largest city. Quite picturesque, a former Japanese possession reconquered by the Soviets in 1946: although not much remains of the Japanese stamp, there are some renovated remains, such as the former Hokkaido Takushoku bank. The city has an important Korean diaspora. Korsakov, served by the train (1h15 from the capital), is a very pleasant stopover: its temperate climate, its wild coasts, its rivers full of fish and its port are attractive. You regularly embark there for Japan, direction Wakkanai (sasco.ru).
