Erected in 1826, it is a cast iron column 2 m high, placed on a parallelepipedal metal pedestal and crowned by a lotus flower with a core in the centre. This one represents the earth, the lotus flower the different parts of the world. The whole is dedicated "To the founder of the city, the navigator V. Bering (1740)". The tomb of the great discoverer is located on the Bering Island, which is connected to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky by air.
