ПЕТРОПАВЛОВСК-ПЕТРОПАВЛОВСК. Petropavlovsk-Kamatchatski is the economic and administrative centre of the peninsula, located in the very south-east. Dominated by the majestic Koryakskaya, an active volcano at an altitude of 3,456 m, the city is the starting point for organized raids to the Valley of Geysers (22 active) and the caldera of the Uzon volcano (9 x 12 km), two natural sites of international importance, accessible by helicopter. Note that the solo adventure is extremely dangerous and that it is imperative to hire a guide. The town, with a population of 181,181, was founded in 1740 as the base camp of the second expedition of Vitus Bering and Alexei Chirikov. Today it is a strategic industrial (fish, timber, ore) and military centre.
