Founded in 1889 as a military post on the river of the same name, Anadyr, with a population of 15,849, is the capital of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. Located at 177° 30′ east longitude, it is the easternmost city of Russia. At the antipodes of Moscow, therefore, but ultra dynamic since it is a strategic arctic port, an industrial and scientific pole (a completely preserved petrified forest from the Upper Paleocene has been discovered there), a mining centre (coal, gold) and an air hub. It relies heavily on its oil and gas deposits, as well as on reindeer husbandry and reindeer fur. Tourists rarely stop here, mostly on all-inclusive trans-polar trips/cruises (e.g. via Alaska). It is also the base camp for extreme treks
