Magadan, 91,781 inhabitants, the pearl of the Far East. This port on the Sea of Okhotsk was founded in 1929. Magadan was indeed the gateway to the terrifying Golden Kolyma: a natural area extremely rich in gold deposits, administered by the no less icy Dalstroy. From the 1930s onwards, thousands of convicts, transported by Trans-Siberian Railway to Vladivostok, were taken by boat to Magadan, awaiting their transfer to one of the 80 disciplinary camps of the Gulag. Today, Magadan shines with a thousand lights: its coastline, its city centre, its exoticism, its gigantic fishing and cargo port, punctuated by the almost incessant activity of the icebreakers, make it a marvellous oriental stopover. The snag: it is only accessible by plane.
