Formerly inhabited by Tlingit Indians, this small community on a peninsula has a population of about 2,400. Haines really came into being in 1903, when a military base was established following disagreements between the Canadian and American governments. The period buildings give a real charm to the town. The surroundings also offer many attractions, the most famous of which is the Bald Eagle Reserve, emblem of the United States, where hundreds of raptors gather on the Chilkat River in the fall. During the summer, the Chilkoot River sees excellent salmon runs that attract fishermen and bears in large numbers. Hiking is also a major asset of the area because of its developed trails.
