Known asthe golden heart of Alaska, due to its central geography and gold rush origins, Fairbanks is the second largest city in the state with approximately 32,700 residents. Its residents are said to have a heart of gold because they have carried on the hospitality of the Athabascans, who once welcomed explorers, trappers and early Western prospectors with open arms.Today, like its big sister Anchorage, the downtown area has undergone changes that do not place Fairbanks as a charming city, but the city is a starting point for adventure. The city still has some charming wooden houses. Thus, 400,000 tourists pass through Fairbanks every year before reaching their main destination: Denali National Park, and then the Inuit villages of Barrow, Kotzebue or Nome, in the Arctic region. Fairbanks is indeed the main starting point for the Great North like Barrow or hiking in the Brooks Range and rafting on the Noatak, Colville or Kobuk rivers. Thus Fairbanks is a transit town, not a resort town. In the summer, the days last more than 22 hours and the night is bathed only in a soft light. It is hard to imagine winter, which starts in mid-September, when temperatures drop and the northern lights gradually replace the midnight sun.
