The small community of Whittier, nestled at the bottom of a fjord in western Prince William Sound, owes its existence to the Second World War. At that time, the American army decided to build a secret base for its army and logistics. In 1943, the construction of a 4 km tunnel allowed to link the deep water port of Anchorage to 100 km. In order to house its troops, the army built two buildings, at the time the largest in the state. The Buckner Building contained 1,000 apartments, a hospital, a movie theater, a swimming pool, a bowling alley, a gymnasium, stores... It is called "the city under the roof". In 1969, the army deserted the place. In 2000, the city was connected to the rest of the continent by the opening of the tunnel. Today, its population, about 215 people, lives on tourism and fishing. It is a classic departure point for mini-cruises to discover the many surrounding glaciers and the marine fauna including otters, whales, dolphins, seals, orcas and a multitude of sea birds. The town is also home to ferries to Valdez, on the other side of Prince William Sound.
