The small fishing port of Valdez, with its 4,036 inhabitants and its coastline, is a charming stopover. Valdez is easily accessible by sea, especially from Whittier, but also by road from the beautiful Richardson Highway. People come here to take a boat cruise to discover the countless crunchy glaciers in this part of Prince Williams Sound Bay, especially the Colombia and Meares glaciers. It is also the terminus of the pipeline that brings thousands of gallons of oil from the far north of the country to be loaded onto ships bound for the four corners of the world. Northeast of Valdez, the region crosses vast stretches of land and borders more mountainous areas that form part of the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park; a diverse area that offers both beautiful scenery and historic villages built during the gold rush, such as Copper Center or Kennecott. In short, this is an area that deserves a visit if possible over a few days to enjoy all it has to offer.
