Port-Grimaud, often called the "little Venice of Provence", is a town entirely created by men, located 5.5 kilometers from Grimaud. In 1966, only a large mosquito-infested swamp at the mouth of the Giscle River closed the Grimaud plain to the sea. An inspired architect, François Spoerry, undertook to clean up the swamp and to create a sort of artificial Venice, a lake city made of multiple canals whose quays are lined with Provençal style houses. This unique architectural ensemble, listed as a 20th century heritage site in 2002, has been awarded the "Outstanding Contemporary Architecture" label since 2018
