Avoriaz, a cult resort for ski lovers whose name inevitably evokes wide open spaces covered in snow and altitude (in fact the resort is called Avoriaz 1800). Located above Morzine to which it is linked, Avoriaz is truly a resort apart in the landscape of Alpine resorts. Avoriaz the young, which celebrated its 45th birthday in 2021 with the anniversary of the opening of the Dromonts hotel in 1966, nevertheless has a history that makes this modern-looking resort a resort with a soul. Avoriaz was built on a high plateau once frequented by shepherds who took their flocks to the mountain pastures. No one came here in winter, except for a few ski lovers who knew this little corner of paradise offered to skiers like Jean Vuarnet, a child of Morzine. Jean Vuarnet, after winning the 1960 Olympic downhill title in Squaw Valley, set out to open this fabulous area to the general public by building a new resort from scratch. To realize his project, he joined forces with Gérard Brémont, founder and president of the Pierre & Vacances group. A young team of architects designed a different resort where skiers would be kings (no cars, streets integrated into the slopes) and the environment preserved as much as possible. Avoriaz has its own personality made of free volumes, original angles that have earned it the label of "Great achievement of the twentieth century heritage". What you can't fail to like are the tavillon roofs, typical Savoyard wooden tiles that change color depending on their orientation. Avoriaz is a lively resort, always animated. From the huge unloading dock where cars hurry to unload their luggage in horse-drawn sleighs adorned with bells, to the residences, hotels and restaurants, via the slopes that open up to the Portes du Soleil, everyone is welcomed with the same enthusiasm. The resort is still the place for innovation in terms of children's education, with the large specialized area designed by Annie Famose and Isabelle Mir: the Children's Village offers a snow garden, a daycare center for P'tits Loups and a ski school. For those who like new experiences, discover ski joëring (pulled by a horse) or speed riding (combining skiing, paragliding and skydiving).
