18 km west of Denpasar and 8 km east of Tabanan, lies the kingdom of Mengwi. It emerged from the Gelgel dynasty and extended its influence as far north as East Java and as far south as Jimbaran. However, it was finally defeated by its neighbors, the kingdoms of Tabanan and Badung, in 1891.Mengwi retains great importance thanks to its magnificent temple, Pura Taman Ayun. This temple is one of the few places where the royal ancestral deities are still honored. Renting a car or scooter is the easiest way to get there, and can be easily organized from Ubud or Kuta, allowing you to explore the site.
