Apart from Old San Juan, Ponce is probably the most interesting city from a tourist point of view in Puerto Rico. There is no shortage of cultural attractions, such as the Art Museum and the Serrallés Castle. Ponce is also one of the few cities that has maintained a lively downtown area, with stores, bars, theaters, art galleries and museums. Travelers from Europe will enjoy visiting this city, especially since it has a strong Puerto Rican, rather than American, identity. Some of the beautiful buildings in the downtown area could use some restoration, but the whole is well preserved and makes Ponce one of the most charming cities in Puerto Rico. With less than 140,000 inhabitants, it has all the makings of a large city, but without the stifling feel. Only sand lovers will find it a disadvantage, as there is no beach nearby. The city council has tried to build one near the port, at the level of the Guancha, but it is still a dusty area. And it must be admitted that the water is not very welcoming...
