Located 120 km from Montevideo, between the Minas and Carapé mountain ranges, and on the banks of the Santa Lucía River, the city of Minas is the capital of the department of Lavalleja, with a population of about 40,000. Thanks to its history, architecture and cultural life, it has become an attractive tourist destination for travelers. During your visit, don't miss the Plaza Libertad, with its gardens and palm trees, and the monument dedicated to General Juan Antonio Lavalleja. The Casa de la Cultura, where Lavalleja was born, is also a place of interest and now houses a museum. For those looking for some fresh air, a walk to Cerro Ventura is recommended, where the largest monument ever erected in honor of Jose Artigas is located.
