Florida is the capital of the department of the same name, with a population of about 35,000, which is half the population of the department. It is located on Ruta 5, about 90 km north of Montevideo. The Santa Lucía Chico river flows east and south of the city. This department, like Canelones, is closely linked to Montevideo, both economically and for tourism. The region is known for its wine and cheese production, as well as for its historical importance dating back to the colonial and independence era, which is still visible today thanks to the many preserved historical buildings and monuments.
