Melo is the capital of the department of Cerro Largo, located 387 km from Montevideo. The city has about 53,000 inhabitants and is made up of low-rise houses, some of which have Portuguese-influenced facades. A must-see is the Uruguayan film El baño del Papa (The Pope's Toilet) by Enrique Fernandes and César Charlone, which tells the story of the hopes and disappointments of the inhabitants of Melo during the Pope's visit in 1988, and in particular those of a small smuggler who had the good idea of building a paying toilet in front of his house for the thousands of pilgrims expected. The scenario is based on a true story, which is the most incredible.
