This peaceful place was founded at the end of the 19th century. At that time, it consisted only of huts on stilts scattered here and there. Its name would come from the colonial period: the area was indeed a godsend for the ships coming from the Old World, which could refuel here with fresh water. The village is surrounded by drinking water lagoons, such as Las Lisas, Clotilde Brioso and Los García, which are part of the protected area declared "zona reserva de la biosfera" by Unesco.
