244 km from Montevideo, La Paloma is a seaside resort located in the south of the department, about 30 km from Rocha but not far from La Pedrera. Like its neighbors, it comes alive mainly between December and March, but outside the tourist peak, the resort has 3,200 inhabitants and enjoys a real local life. It has a fishing port, Los Botes, as well as stores, restaurants and many accommodations. It is not the most beautiful town on the coast from an aesthetic point of view, but the atmosphere is very pleasant. One can even be fascinated by its almost Stalinist aspect, its main road lined with completely obsolete buildings from the 1950s to the 1970s that will delight architecture lovers, its famous skate park from the same period standing like a monument, entirely graffitied, facing its charming little white lighthouse. A very popular resort in the past, it has aged rather badly and has many abandoned buildings. It is more popular than its neighbors José Ignacio) or La Pedrera. It is not so much its center disfigured by concrete that is sought after by the wealthy but its part called La Serena. Indeed, here, the pines shade small sandy roads, the beach is beautiful and very safe, unlike almost all those in the region. It is therefore ideal for families. Surfers prefer the beaches of La Balconada, La Aguada and Los Botes. Beware, during the carnival period, La Paloma is full to bursting: it is essential to book accommodation (prices are sky-high).
