It is located on the Ruta 10 km 182, about 35 km east of Punta del Este. José Ignacio is the resort of the upper classes, and is ideally located between two lagoons: the Garzón Lagoon and the José Ignacio Lagoon. It is a peninsula that is 2 km wide and 800 meters long. José Ignacio has preserved a picturesque character with its small square, its lighthouse, its rocky and wild coasts, its stone and wooden houses, its small fishing port where fresh fish is sold. However, today it is a more sophisticated, upscale resort that attracts wealthy vacationers looking for tranquility (unlike those who go to Punta del Este). The hotels are all high-end. There are two beaches: Playa Mansa (to the west, on the right at the entrance of the village) with its fishermen's boats and its superb sunsets, and Playa Brava (on the left) where surfers meet. For the record, José Ignacio owed his name to the first settler of the region. Sent in the XVIIIth century by the Spanish monarchy to bring from Maldonado products of the country, the man settled in this peaceful place to become a fisherman, creating a simple village and a community. José Ignacio is a very pleasant place, an attractive resort that leaves no visitor indifferent. The choice of restaurants is quite interesting for such a small place. There are also beautiful decoration stores and art galleries. An oasis of peace where it is good to live (provided you have the means!).
