In the th century, the Atlántida region was frequented by pirates. In the middle of the th century, this area was christened Santa Rosa in tribute to a Portuguese ship approaching the shores to commercialize contraband goods produced by the Jesuits. In 1909, a group of medical students bought the land for the populate of eucalyptus and pine, and called the place Atlántida in 1911. The typical huts were built between the trees from the 1920 s, when tourism grew. Later, the small station is becoming more and more assertive and is one of the most popular in Montevideo, attracting the so-called «upper average» class that could afford or rent a secondary residence. It would even appear that Carlos Gardel liked to spend his holidays. The place of meeting of Argentins and Uruguay, the atmosphere is family and peaceful, with huge beaches and often deserted. the dunes overflow on the road, which borders the river Río. In recent years, it has been the subject of slow German immigration. We appreciate the landscape, picturesque and soothing. We will stop there at least from Montevideo for picnics or sunbathe! From Atlántida to the km 45 on Ruta Interbalneario, at the junction of Highway 11. Today, Atlántida is still considered the capital of the Costa del Oro.
