The town of Nikkō (population 90,000) is of little interest in itself, but it is the gateway to the temples and shrines as well as the gigantic national park around Tōshō-gu. The latter is the heart of the visit. Its baroque architecture, full of gilding and bright colors, stands in stark contrast to more conventional Japanese styles. The entire site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason! The large natural park surrounding the city is also a popular tourist destination, with its natural landscapes, spas and numerous outdoor activities.
