Dance festivals are held to commemorate the dead. People dance to the point of drunkenness to the sound of drums.
The celebrations, testifying of the respect towards the ancestors and the dead, extend over several days in mid-August. At this time, most Japanese people are on vacation. They are reunited with their families and go to the graves of their loved ones. Several celebrations are linked to Obon, such as the famous lanterns that glide on the water to guide the souls of ancestors to the other world, or the bon-odori, folk dance festivals in which everyone can take part. The dates of O-bon vary.
