Khaudum Game Reserve is still one of those virgin lands where, as Alphonse Allais would say, "The hand of man has very rarely set foot." It stretches across the thick and truly wild savannah of Bushmanland. Its 384,000 hectares of pristine and protected land are a veritable Eden for African wildlife, as yet unaccustomed to seeing visitors. Elephants crossing the track do not like to be cut off at all: the whole family must cross without being disturbed. If the dominant female elephant feels that her peace and quiet is being threatened, she will stop in front of the vehicle and lift her front foot in a steady motion, so that the intruder must turn back. However, if you do not have much time to spend in Khaudum, and if you are not accompanied by a local guide who knows the movements of the wildlife, you should not expect to find here an annex of Etosha: as the park is open, the animals migrate freely towards Botswana and the lands of Bushmanland or the Kavango region, to the north. The concentration of wildlife is therefore far from reaching the quantity of Etosha. Moreover, the vegetation is dense and the high grass limits the visibility. However, the wilder setting of this reserve is most appreciable, and the game spotted there seems to have a different value than in Etosha, which is too touristic in comparison, where the contact with nature is not the same.
