Located on the B1, between Otjiwarongo and Grootfontein, this former German garrison town is best known for its mining activity. The Imperial German Army was defeated here on July1, 1915 by South African troops, leading to the signing of the Khorab Peace Treaty. A small monument commemorates this event a few kilometers from Otavi. Otavi, with its 11,000 inhabitants, has become a major copper mining center and is not an essential stop for travelers, except for supplies. However, the terrain of the surrounding area (the Otavi Mountains) is attractive and allows for beautiful hikes in the nearby guest farms.
