As evidenced by rock paintings and archaeological excavations in the area, the first occupants of Omaruru, probably the San (Bushmen), settled there several thousand years ago. They were followed by the Bergdamara (the Damara who fled to the mountains to escape persecution by the Nama, and later by the Herero) and by the Herero who came with their herds to these lands at the end of the 19th century. In 1851, the first missionary entered Omaruru (in Herero omaere omaruru, means "bitter curd", referring to the bitterness of the cows' milk due to the leaves of a bush that grows near the river). From 1858, Omaruru became an attractive city for hunters and explorers (John Andersson, Axel Eriksson...), which had disastrous consequences on the rhino, elephant, lion and giraffe populations of the region. The beginning of the 20th century was marked by fighting between Germans and Hereros. In 1904, Outjo was connected by rail to Otavi and gained its status as a municipal town in 1909. The city has grown considerably. Today it has several banks and gas stations, a hospital, a supermarket, hotels and restaurants that are being modernized and a few coffee shops
