A 14 km from Blida and 35 km from Algiers, Boufarik is a small town of the Mitidja famous for its oranges and zlabia, a kind of huge, very bold doughnut, fried and refrit, sold in all the small shops on the main street. But Boufarik is known mainly for being the cradle of the drink known as Orangina. The famous oranges of Boufarik, soleil of sunshine and sweet to wish, inspired a French colon, Léon Concrete, who invented this sparkling drink with the taste of orange that will later be world known. It was at the Algiers Fair in 1937 that Léon Concrete met Dr. Trigo, a Spanish laborantin, presenting a mysterious small bottle containing an orange concentrate and an essential oil vial. The mixture had to be added to sweet, and then carbonated water, to give a carbonated drink Que had christened Naranjina. Léon Concrete, séduit, buys the recipe and markets the product under the name we know it today. Then starts the Orangina saga, which turns around the world of bistro terraces. In Independence, Orangina warehouses move to Marseilles. Today, Boufarik is a pretty small town with all the souvenirs of "orange" souvenirs. During a walk in the centre, you can discover old warehouses with Art deco facades in good condition. See also, the "118", that is, the former Jesuit school.
