Between Zéralda and Bou-Ismail, the small town of Koéla, once inhabited by Andalusians and Moors, has retained its charm. Bou Ismaïl (ex-Castiglione) is imbued with a certain nostalgia that can be felt in a colonial architecture that is still very much alive. Created in 1848 under the name of Castiglione in memory of a victorious battle of Bonaparte, the village attracted Phoenician sailors much earlier, who made this natural shelter a place to dock and trade with local populations. The city has a major school specialising in higher education, scientific research and technological development in the maritime and port sector.
