This village of around 1,000 inhabitants, built around the Ticino river, is historically famous for the Battle of Sassi Grossi (or simply the Battle of Giornico), which took place in 1478. The Duke of Milan had broken his promise to return the Valle Leventina to the canton of Uri. The Uri, aided by a regiment of 600 confederates, were able to resist the Milanese and retake the Leventina. Today, it's a peaceful port of call, with vineyards and numerous religious buildings. It's pleasant to stroll through the vineyards or along the river. In the middle of the Ticino River, don't miss the small inhabited island, accessible by stone-arched bridges. It's a sight not to be missed.
