The village of Airolo, with 1,600 inhabitants, is situated at the edge of the Leventina Valley, at the junction of the Val Bedretto, which connects the Ticino to the Valais via the Nüfenen Pass (a beautiful mountain road). It can be reached either by the road from the Gotthard to Italy or by the SBB railway line (Gotthard line). Airolo is a starting point for many hikes. While in the village, take the opportunity to visit the Sasso Sangottardo (https://fr.sasso-sangottardo.ch), the former secret fortress of the St. Gotthard which houses giant crystals and a cabinet of curiosities. For a panoramic view, take the Airolo cable car.
