This village is the capital of the Franches-Montagnes, the high plateau region of the Jura mountains. Man did not settle in this land of the hautes Joux (large forests) until the 14th century. The abolition of taxes and royalties, thanks to the signing of a charter of franchises by Prince-Bishop Imier of Ramstein, explains the name "Franches-Montagnes", still in use today. The region's geography and landscapes make it a paradise for hikers, particularly horseback riders. The locality has its own breed of horses, lightly built with a gruff, friendly appearance.
