Former property of the Dukes of Alsace. An episcopal city until the end of the 18th century, Delémont was annexed to France. It was annexed to Switzerland in 1815 at the Congress of Vienna and became a bailiwick, then a district of the canton of Bern before becoming the largest district in the canton of Jura. Since 1979, it has also been the capital of the canton and the most populous town, with over 12,000 inhabitants. The old town is a charming place to stroll and is steeped in Basel and Alsatian influences, with its characteristic Gothic town houses, Renaissance fountains and imposing Baroque monuments
