La Chaux-de-Fonds, the world's cradle of watchmaking, is the canton's second-largest municipality. Situated at an altitude of 1,000 m, it is also the second-highest town in Switzerland, behind Davos. The birthplace of Le Corbusier, La Chaux-de-Fonds is home to a series of large modern architectural ensembles, reminiscent of the master's most controversial works, and a modern church reminiscent of Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp. The town, also known colloquially as La Tchaux, has often been described as a dull, gray city, but today the facades sport cheerful colors. The architecture reflects the spirit of watchmaking.
