The capital of the Val-de-Travers district, Môtiers boasts a beautiful 10th-century priory open to visitors, a Grand-Rue lined with charming houses and the Musée des Mascarons. Adjacent to the Grand-Rue is the rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the house where the writer lived from 1762 to 1765. It has been converted into a museum, where Rousseau's work is evoked through manuscripts and first editions. See also the Hôtel des Six-Communes, a covered market commemorating the union of the six communes of the upper Val-de-Travers. At no. 12 Grand-Rue, don't miss the Pitteloud dairy and creamery, where you can stock up on good Gruyère and Neuchâtel tomme.
