Leukerbad (1,295 inhabitants - alt. 1,402 m.), the largest spa resort in the Alps, appears to be a rich resort. Hot springs lie deep in the mountains, and as early as 1315, the water was recognized as beneficial. In the 15th century, Cardinal Schiner and the Bishop of Sion began to exploit this natural heritage. Today, around 4 million liters of water at temperatures of up to 51°C gush out of Leukerbad's mountain springs every day. Several ski lifts take you up to the neighbouring peaks, and there are many hiking trails in the surrounding area.
