Sierre (Siders in German) is a small town of character with 17,000 inhabitants, 17 km from Sion. It is a wine-growing commune in the Rhone Valley, renowned as the capital of Swiss wine and as the sunniest town in the country. It is a crossroads for tourists on their way to the resort of Crans-Montana and those heading to the Val d'Anniviers, but it is also the capital of the most important district in the Valais, which bears its name. The site has been known since the Romans, who settled in this city, which was then called Sirrum Amaenum. You can walk along the Rue du Bourg, in the footsteps of Rainer Maria Rilke, who stayed in the present-day town hall
